Panelist-Profile: Amy Hoy, designer, bootstrapper

Amy Hoy
Amy Hoy (bootstrapper, designer, founder) joins the panel of experts as queen of bootstrapping!
“Hi, I’m Amy. My Twitter bio is “interface radical.” I take boring old ho-hum software (like time tracking and tweet walls) and make it refreshing, shiny, and fun.”

Logo - STARTup Live Vienna
“Create value, and charge for it” is one of her major views on founding and building companies. She writes about it beautifully on her blog: unicornfree.com. Among other things, she argues that working on your “monetization-strategies” is rather like admitting that your product does not really solve a problem worth solving…

Guiding Principles

Group number one:

  • Beauty is as crucial to human happiness as function
  • By doing great things, we invite & give permission for the people around us to do great things
  • There is no such thing as “business ethics,” there is only “ethics,” full stop.

Group number two:

  • Software can be uplifting
  • Software can be cheerful and beautiful (even business software!)
  • Software should help you grow, not just do what you expect it to do

Group number three:

  • Openness
  • Empathy
  • Joy
  • Stewardship

Stuff to ask about

  • Building to keep
  • Building on direct income – ergo bootstrapping
  • Development
  • Design
  • Life as a foreigner in Vienna
